Mobicon 2008

So I'm back from my second convention of the year, Mobicon.

Much fun was had, but the highlights were that we played in a sealed box DnD minis tournament. I took second place :-) and a rousing game of Lord of the fries was played. There was a nice dealer room as well, although laking on the gaming merchants (only two).

Mobicon may be a smaller con, but I think I will start attending them more often now.  Although I was only there for one day, I actually I think had a bit more fun then our own Coast con... I hope we can make a difference for next year's coast con... bring back some of the fun that has been missing for the past several years.

Back to work...

As was thought... Much fun was had this weekend. Coast Con was a big hit for me and the gang.

We played several new games and the gang became the gang +1... Welcome to group Roy!

So a rundown of the gaming activities:

  • A few games of Settlers of Catan were played, and although I was not playing in the games of Catan, it was still fun to watch one of the most brutal games of Catan I think I have seen.
  • Cash and Guns - Our new gang Member, Roy, introduced us to Cash and Guns... This has to be one of the most fun, under 30 minutes, game I have ever played. The idea is simple, there is money in the pot, and the best way to get the most of your share, is take out the competition. So on the count of three everyone points their gun at one of their friends. once you see who is pointing their gun at you, you have a chance to duck for cover, taking you out of the firefight. Then, those that stood their ground chance being shot in the chest and knocked down, taking one of three wounds. Those left standing split the pot...  it is like Russian roulette with your friends!
  • Arkham Horror - Also brought in by Roy, Wow... All Call of Cthulhu fans must own this board game!! this is a remake of the original 1987 game and is stunning!, with expansion sets, tons of characters, monsters and old ones! Arkham Horror is a cooperative game for 1-8 players. Portals are poping up everywhere, monsters are flooding through them, and if our reality is shaken up enough, one of the old ones them selves will step through!
  • Mutants and Masterminds - One of the best superhero, RPG experiences I have ever had... Props to John for a great game. A misfit band of mostly dead superheros (a vampire, an android, a cyborg, and a Crow lookalike) are the only chance the megaverse has!!!  Will they save us all, or will the megaverse blink out of existence...
  • Talisman - Much fun was had in this game I won....  or would have had we not ended it early... lol Classic fantasy adventure, pick a character, and go defeat the world!! Only one can take the crown of comand and rule them all!!
  • Guillotine - The game of Nobles being sent to the headsman, and we get to be the headsmen, we get more points the more stately the noble!

Well Thats it for to day... I'll give some other highlights later

Great article On the rise of podcast fiction

The San Francisco Chronicle posted a great article on the Future Dark Overlord, Scott Sigler, Mr. Palms Daddy himself, Seth Harwood, and the future of Book publishing that is Podcast fiction.

You can read it here.

The cool thing though is that I got an email from the Chronicle on a comment I made on the article.

My comment:

"This is the wave of the future folks... If publishing is going to survive it has to wake up and smell the digital coffee!! Great article!"

Check out the article and Let me know what you think.

Twitter!

So the last week I have become obsessed with Twitter....

For those of you that don't know, Twitter is like a mini-blog/Chat client. All posts are limited to 140 characters... yep that is right characters, but what is so cool is it is like a chat that never ends, even if your away for a while.

The way it works is that you follow the people that you want to read about, and they can in turn follow you. After a while you get a stream of conversation and updates on: news, what people are up to, or just cool web finds. It is all this and more.

If you want to go check it out,  here is my profile page....

Come join in the conversation that never ends :)

INFECTED!!!!

Wow it has bee a while again... but I should be able to start back up again now... More free time coming :)

So I take this Time to Bow before my Evil Dark Overlord.... Scott Sigler

I just got My copy of Infected and are already on chapter 6....

Here are some reviews for his new book:

"Part Stephen King, part Chuck Palahniuk, Infected blends science fiction and horror into a pulpy masterpiece of action, terror, and suspense.  Three recommendations: don't read it at night, or just after you've eaten a full meal, or if you're weak of heart.  You've been warned!"
—James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of The Judas Strain and Black Order

“Sigler is masterful at grabbing the reader by the throat and refusing to let go. Just when I thought I knew what abyss he was leading me across, he knocked the bridge out from under... I think I screamed the whole way down... Infected is a marvel of gonzo, in-your-face, up-to-the-minute terror.”
—Lincoln Child, New York Times bestselling author of Deep Storm and Death Match

“Sigler is the Richard Matheson of the 21st Century…smart and creepy, Infected is a flawless thinking-person’s thriller. Bravo to a bold new talent!”
—Jonathan Maberry, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Bad Moon Rising and Ghost Road Blues

"Horror mavens rejoice! Infected is a revelation -- a novel that lives up to its hype. From page one, the story of a mysterious smart-virus that turns its hosts into deadly drooling drones creeps up on a reader like the ratchet of a roller coaster climbing toward its inevitable crest. Sigler brings the folksy character detail of Stephen King, the conceptual panache of Clive Barker, and the oozing, shuddery pathologies of a David Cronenberg movie. Zombies, spies, conspiracies, and gallons of goo make this the fastest read in the west! Highest recommendation!"
Jay Bonansinga, national bestselling author of Shattered, Twisted, Frozen, and The Sinking of the Eastland

"Sigler has a unique talent for keeping readers on the edge of their seats; I absolutely had to know what was going to happen next. Infected is full of mayhem, action, and gore--and you won’t be able to put it down."
Dave Wellington, author of 13 Bullets and the Monster Island trilogy

"Scott Sigler's Infected is a bucking pulp pony that throws you this way and that, and just when you think you've got your balance, that ole pony bucks the other way. All in all, one hell of an exhilarating ride, and highly recommended."
—Joe R. Lansdale, World Horror Convention Grand Master and six-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Bubba Ho-Tep and Lost Echoes

"Infected is as unnerving as a scream in a morgue…a breakout novel that gets under your skin. If the voice in your head is Sigler's, you're locked in for a very scary night."
—E.E. Knight

Looks at Watch...

Wow.... So I have kinda fallen behind in my duties...

It has been a weird rush of a few months.... Lets see

Lost my job..... Looked forever for a new one..... almost lost my Car.... then out of the blue, I get an email from this company that I had applied with almost 7 months previous. So I get the job saving my ass big time, only to find out that it has the same down sides of my last job.... (Being cheap where the employees salaries are concerned), but otherwise exactly what I was looking for. Now Mind I'm making a lot more then my last job, which is great, but at almost half the industry norm...

Oh well I actually like my job! I really don't have any complaints.... yet! So things are look great for the near future. I have a Monday - Friday Job, something I have never had before, I Love my co-workers, My schedule is pretty spiffing (Although I do miss Friday nights off), and the pay is not that bad.

The writing is still slow going, but I have a story journal now that I'm jotting down Ideas as I get them. I have took a step back for Mystic Paradox, as I want to write a detailed outline before really moving forward.

I'm Still on DDO, and enjoy the game. My only real complaint is that it is eating away at my Xbox 360 time.. LOL

Well my New PnP (thats Pen and Paper) Campaign is looking good. My only complaint  though is I'm not as happy with the opening adventures... the overall story is really cool though... I might just have to write a book about this world too. :)

Well until My next update.. hopefully soon...

Have fun... and Don't do what I would!

Halo, Bioshock, and Orange box

Wow... it has been a while.....

Well I have been quite busy... Finding a new job, school, and playing my Xbox 360.

I must say... I love my 360! The current game outlook is great, and it currently has some of the best games out right now.

Bioshock...  wow! this is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played. And the game play is really good too. The setting is like the 1930's and the main character, has crash landed in the middle of the ocean, right next to this huge tower. You make your way down into a world that is part 10,000 leagues under the sea, and part steam punk... with genetic alterations thrown in. You make your way through Rapture, an underwater city.... full of Genetic freaks that have gone batty.

Halo 3.... Well that has to be about the game of the year... but everyone knew that was coming. Master Chief returns for the final chapter of this fantastic series. The brutes are tougher, and Cortana is missing....  Great game!

Orange Box... What can I say.... any time a company gives you 5 games in one title.... bargain!!! This includes Half-life 2, HL2: episode one and two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Well I'm having fun with all of them... But Portal!!!!  My God what a game.  I can't wait to see if they give us another chapter in it..... it is by far one of the greatest puzzle games ever!!! I have also been enjoying Half Life 2... I'm a good way though, and man is it nice. I can see why my computers could never handle it.

On a side note... I have also been playing this very cool Puzzle game on Xbox live arcade. It is called Puzzle quest, and it is a combo of a bejewled like puzzle, and a RPG.. very cool!

Working out!

Well yesterday marked my return to the gym. After several years of not going and "trying to use the home gym" I have finally thrown down the gauntlet and went back.

It felt... good!

I have done this before, and lost quite a bit of weight, but now it is a dire need that I shed myself of this crap. My doctor is to the point of "you need to have surgery to get rid of it," but I'm giving it one month to see if I can garner some results.

I have also started a diet. It is based on the way down plan. You as much change what you eat, as much as change how much you eat, and how often. So I eat a good breakfast, and then every three hours I have something to eat. It may be an apple or a banana, or it could be a half a sandwich and a couple of chips. You basically start by cutting each meal in half, and go from there. My mother has done a great job on this, and I have done it before and got results. Also I'm cutting all foods out of my diet that are sweet, for being sweet! I should have done that a while ago....

For my workout, I'm using the body for life plan, so I will work out three times a week, alternating between upper and lower body in the work out. yesterday I started out with a worm up of walking, and then started the real workout. I hit every upper body machine they had in the standard, constrained machines... then I saw that they had a group of machines that are all, pulley based.....  that is so cool.... it allows a much more fluid workout, your muscles can't cheat, and you can alternate the workout on the fly.....  changing the angle of the rep. so I will most likely use those in the future.

Well wish me luck!

Mystic Paradox Chapter 2: Arrivals

Here is chapter 2 for you guys.  Let me know what you think

________________________________________

Arrivals

The old church basement was cold and dark. The floor had a layer of dust thick enough that you could see the foot prints of small creatures scattered from one end of the room to the other with no effort, even in dim light. The ceiling was covered in cobwebs. It had been ages since anyone had been there. In fact, the whole church had been abandoned for years. There was actually talk that the local diesis might actually try to renovate the old “turn of the century” cathedral, but there was no threat of that happening any time soon.

A light sparked into existence in the middle of an archway, in the center of the room. The pinprick of light then grew into a vertical line that stretched from the floor to the top of the archway. The line then spun opening up into a portal of light. After a few seconds of the glistening portal bathing the once dark room in its light, the surface of the portal rippled, as a man stepped through.

The man walked into the room kicking dust into the air. He noticed the dust and waved his hand, wiggling a few fingers. The dust was slammed back to the ground as though it had never been disturbed. Another flip of the man’s fingers and a ball of light appeared in his upturned hand, illuminating the entire room as though daylight spilled in from some unseen window. The light illuminated the dark green cloak the man was wearing, with the hood pulled up around his face.

The man’s features were youthful, but showed wisdom beyond his years. While His striking green eyes surveyed the room, his free hand pulled some fine powder from a pouch at his belt. He placed the powder on his tongue, and made a symbol with his hand and fingers. A glowing rune appeared in the air where his fingers had traced, and his eye’s and hand began to glow. He held his glowing hand in the air, palm out, and watched where his palm pointed. He swept the room several times before dropping the detection spell he had conjured.

“It’s ok. The building is empty, as expected. Come on through.”

Then, the shimmering portal rippled again as a second and then a third person came through, stepping into the old basement. This time the dust did not leave the floor, and continued to look undisturbed. The first of the two was a middle-aged woman with long blond hair flowing from the hood of her dark-red cloak.

“That was a very good casting Nicholas. Very good control, I have taught you well.” She said with a smile from her soft pink lips. She pulled out a small round crystal that she peered into. “Very good casting indeed, you got us here within twelve hours of the incursion, and according to my reading the location you picked was flawless, within fifteen miles of the insurrection.”

“Thank you, Mistress Alana. According to all records of the time, this building should be abandoned.” Nicholas exclaimed. “We should be able to use it as a local base while we are here.” Nicholas released the globe from his hand, and it floated up into the air just above where his hand had just been. He then went over to the shimmering gate and pulled out a long wooden stick, a wand, and with the flick of his wrest and a few strong words, spoken softly, the gateway closed.

The third person pulled back his hood exposing a bald head and a solid square jaw. His brown eyes took in the musty basement and his deep voice reverberated through the stone room. “We need to act quickly. There are only five days until zero hour. This is a going to be a very dangerous assignment.”

“Good point Cameron! We need to be on our toes on this one. The timing can’t be a coincidence. This Kar’chak must be planning on trying to stop zero hour, and that can not be allowed.”

The three began pulling their cloaks off and Alana pulled out a small brass key that she used to trace a square in the air. Reality ripped open in the space she had traced, the surface of the square now glowing white. She took their cloaks and placed them inside the glowing square, then she touched the dimensional pocket with her key again, and it closed. Cameron opened the large bag he had brought and began handing out supplies. He gave a small pouch to Nicholas. He pulled a out handbag and gave it to Alana.

Nicholas opened his pouch and in it were the trappings of this time. A pistol called a Glock 9mm, four clips of ammunition, a communicator known as a cell phone, a headset to use with the phone, a small pocket knife, some paper the locals used for money, a folding map of the area, and a small computer called a PDA with all the data they could find on this time loaded on it.

Nicholas looked up to see Alana checking her set of gear. She had a stubby little pistol. I believe it was called a Walther PK. She also had a small folding computer the size of a notebook that she was powering up. She pulled out her ‘phone’ and a cable that connected it to the computer, and began working on it.

Nicholas noticed Cameron fitting a shoulder holster for the hand canon he had brought for himself. It was a revolver that took a high caliber round. He believed it was called a 357 Magnum. Cameron spun the pistol around his finger a few times, ending with placing the pistol in its holster, like an old west gunfighter of over a millennia ago. Cameron was enamored with that time period. He was wearing a full leather outfit, with black leather pants, a black tee-shirt, and a long black leather trench coat.

“Ok, we know the Kar’chak arrived yesterday. Nothing I can find from the local paper suggests that he has made a move yet, no history has changed yet. He or she could be a very shrewd customer. We must be very cautious… but we do have a lot of ground to cover in only a few days.” Alana said as she read through the local news on her computer.

She continued, “I think it will be best if we split up. Nicholas is well trained and I think he can take care of himself on this one. I will stay here for now and coordinate, Nicholas I want you to take to the north, Cameron take south. I want you both to keep your eyes and your senses open.”

“Yes, Miss Alana. I hope not to let you down.” Nicholas said proudly.
